How to Recover from a Failed Windows Update

Issue Description 

A failed update can cause boot loops, crashes, or feature malfunctions. 

Common Causes 

  • Interrupted update process 
  • Insufficient disk space 
  • Driver conflicts 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Boot Into Recovery 

  • Force restart 2–3 times 
  • Enter Advanced options 

 

Step 2: Uninstall Recent Update 

  • Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Uninstall Updates 
  • Remove latest quality update 
  • Restart 

 

Step 3: Repair System Files 

  • Open Command Prompt (Advanced options) 
  • Run: 
  • sfc /scannow 
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth 

 

Step 4: Retry Update 

  • Boot normally 
  • Open Windows Update 
  • Check for updates again
